A small, but critical, safety device in your home are GFCI outlets. They have a test button for a reason. Performing regular tests of the GFCI outlets ensure they are still working properly and will trip if, and when, necessary and could save your life.

What You Need to Do

  • Go to each GFCI outlet in your home. These can be identified because they have TEST and RESET buttons.
  • Press the TEST button.
  • Validate there is no power to the outlet now by either using a voltage detector or attempting to plug something into the outlet.
  • Press the RESET button.
  • Validate there is power.
  • Mark this task complete.

Note that other, normal, outlets could be connected to the GFCI outlet you are testing and could lose power during the test.
