Inspect roof for damage
Every year on September the 1st
Your home's roof is like the umbrella that keeps everything dry underneath it. It's important to perform a visual inspection of your roof to make sure there is no damage from storms, leaves or debris piling up (which can cause rot), or any other indication of an issue. Obviously you must be careful when heading up to the roof, so if you aren't comfortable with ladders or heights then you might want to hire a professional to take a look on your behalf.
Things You'll Need
- An extension ladder
Time Involved
25-30 minutes
What You Need to Do
- Place ladder in a good spot to gain access to the roof. Check this great article on setting up a ladder.
- Head up to the roof.
- Check around all roof intrusions and ensure there is not any build up of leaves or debris. Intrusions include skylights, chimneys, vents, etc. Any place where leaves and debris can pile up should be checked and cleared.
- Check the general condition of the roof. Look for spots where the shingles look damaged , are missing, or are missing considerable granules. Keep an eye out for shingles that are buckling or curling.
- Check any exposed wood that may be around chimneys or other structures and look for rotting wood.
- Contact a roofing professional if you see any concerns.
- Mark this task complete.
