Inspect fireplace and flue

Every year on September the 25th
If you have a traditional wood burning fire place, it's essential to ensure it is safe and ready for use. Damage to the fire box or heavy deposits of creote can cause house fires. Be sure to conduct this critical home maintenance prior to the start of your fireplace season.

Things You'll Need

  • A shop vacuum or brush and dustpan
  • A flashlight

Time Involved

10-15 minutes

What You Need to Do

  • Sweep or vacuum all ashes from the fire box.
  • Inspect the fire box for any cracks or issues.
  • Inspect that the damper opens and closes properly.
  • Inspect the damper and the flue for any large build up of creosote.
  • Hire a chimney sweep to clean your flue, if necessary. This is a dirty job and most likely best left to the professionals.
  • Mark this task complete.
