Inspect, clean and grease garage door
Every year on July the 7th
Just about everything that moves can use a little love to keep things working correctly and that includes garage doors that can weigh hundreds of pounds. Making sure that all the moving parts are clean and lubricated will reduce noise and ensure everything is in great working order.
Things You'll Need
- Rags
- Brake cleaner (optional)
- Silicon or Lithium spray
- An adjustable wrench, socket set, or nut drivers
Time Involved
20-30 minutes
What You Need to Do
- Inspect the garage door and track
- Inspect all the fasteners that attach the frame to the door. Tighten fasteners as needed.
- Inspect the track to ensure it is well attached and no damage as occurred.
- Inspect the rollers and look for excessive wear and tear
- Listen to the door go up and down and attempt to isolate any abnormal sounds.
- Clean the track with a rag. Cleaning the track includes the side tracks and the track that runs down the middle. Optionally, spray some break cleaner on the track to help with cleaning.
- Lubricate all moving parts with the silicon or lithium spray. Do not use normal WD-40. They make a lithium and a silicon spray that are fine to use, but don't use their normal general purpose product. Pay special attention to the rollers (and their bearings). You can spray the chain lightly.
- Mark this task complete.
