Clean refrigerator and freezer coils

Every year on April the 6th
Your refrigerator is not a maintenance free item. There are fans moving air and as that air moves over the coils, dust will collect. Cleaning of the coils will ensure that your refriderator continues to operate efficiently.

Things You'll Need

  • A shop vacuum
  • A coil brush
  • A screwdriver

Time Involved

15-20 minutes

What You Need to Do

  • Pull the refrigerator away from the wall and unplug it. Be careful of any water supply line. You don't need to disconnect it, but just be careful not to damage it.
  • Determine where the coils are. They will either be on the back of the unit (and very visible) or under the unit.
  • If the coils are on the back of the unit, use the brush and vacuum to clean them thoroughly. You are done and can move on to plugging the unit back in and putting it back in place.
  • If you don't see visible coils on the back of the unit, they are located underneath.
  • First, remove the grill or cover at the bottom of the front of unit. On most units this will be held in with 2-4 screws.
  • Remove the grill or cover at the bottom of the back of the unit. This will also be held in with 2-4 screws.
  • Using the brush and the vacuum, clean the entire accessible area under the unit. Clean the coils, fan, motor, and anywhere you see dust.
  • Replace the grill or cover on the front and back of the unit.
  • Plug everything back in and put the refrigerator back in place.
  • Mark this task complete.
