Clean garbage disposal

You may think that normal operation of your garbage disposal would keep it clean and tiday, and you'd be wrong. As with all the other appliances and devices in your home, regular maintenance is key. Spend some time maintaining your garbage disposal and it will last longer and not stick up your kitchen.

- Ice
- Bleach
- Dish soap

What You Need to Do
- First, run the garbage disposal with the water running for 30-60 seconds just to take care of any loose items sitting in the disposal.
- Turn off the garbage disposal.
- Plug the sink drain with the drain plug.
- Fill the sink with about 3-4 inches of water.
- Dump ice in the sink so that it is at the same level as the water.
- Put a heavy squirt of dish soap in the ice water.
- Start the garbage disposal up and immediately remove the drain plug.
- As the water gets low, turn the water back on to ensure that the garbage disposal always has water entering it.
- Run the garbage disposal until it has processed all the ice.
- Turn the disposal back off.
- Plug the drain back up and fill with 3-4 inches of water.
- Add 1/2 cup bleach and another squirt of disk soap.
- Turn the disposal back on and immediately remove the drain plug.
- Turn the water back on to ensure that water is always entering the disposal while it is running.
- Once the sink is drained, turn off the disposal and water.
- Utilize a sponge or brush to clean the opening to the disposal thoroughly.
- Rinse the sink
- Mark this task complete.
